Bamboo: a greener future for beauty

For thousands of years, bamboo has been used in everything from food and medicine, to construction and household goods. It is considered one of the most versatile and sustainable materials in the world, and the beauty industry is taking note.

Since the company was first founded in 2014, Elate has been using bamboo as both a packaging solution and an ingredient in many of our products. We work with a green certified supplier, who produces water-treated bamboo pieces that are long lasting and beautiful.

About Bamboo

Bamboo is a hardy grass with over 1,000 species that can grow and thrive in tropical and temperate environments. It’s regeneration process is approximately 10x faster than wood, with some species about to grow up to 4cm in an hour, and can be harvested in 3 to 5 years. Because bamboo does not require the use of pesticides or irrigation to thrive, it is fairly easy to cultivate and is grown widely around the world.

Bamboo is touted as a “carbon neutral” plant, due to its ability to sequester carbon at a rate of up to 300 kilos annually for a mature culm.

Responsible Disposal

Disposing of your Elate bamboo packaging responsibly is an easy process, and one that we encourage as part of a conscious beauty ritual. As our bamboo is water treated, it can be broken up and composted. We recommend wearing gloves during the disposal process to avoid splinters.

For liquid items in tubes, such as the Elate Essential Mascara and Liquid Eyeline, you can crush the bamboo casing off of the recyclable inner tube with a large pair of pliers (we use a pair of pipe wrench pliers in our office that work like a dream). Once the bamboo has been composted, simply wash your inner tube out thoroughly and add it to your household recycling.

For items such as the Bamboo Capsule Palette or Bamboo Blush Compact, a few extra steps need to be taken such as removing the magnets and mirrors. Lay out a piece of thick paper on a hard surface to catch any shards that may break off from the bamboo or mirror.
